elena aka Helen the Bashful Dragon

Jelena first started writing poetry and short stories in her native Serbo-Croatian language, and she published her work in several anthologies. She is the winner of the 1991 Yugoslav poetry competition, “Chegar Fires.” Jelena moved to the United States in 1992, and began writing in English. She is a 2002 Los Angeles Slam semi-finalist, and she performs throughout the Los Angeles area, where she has been featured at several poetry venues. Jelena published two chapbooks of poetry and is currently working on her first spoken word CD. She writes for LitRave, a spoken word website, where she reviews Los Angeles poetry readings and reports on local slam competitions. Both her life and work underscore themes of multi-culturalism, humanitarianism, and peaceful co-existence.
